In 1992, the Woodbury Police Department became the sponsor of a Police Explorer Program. The Boy Scouts of America oversee the Police Explorer program. Exploring is different from traditional scouting programs in that its focus is on career and lifetime interest exploration. The mission of exploring is to leverage community resources to provide young men and women between the ages of 14 and 21 with experiences, guidance, tools, and opportunities to allow them to explore career aspirations in the law enforcement profession and, in the process, to become responsible, ethical and contributing adults.
The Woodbury Police Explorer Post will endeavor to provide its members with the experiences and training that will demonstrate the nature of law enforcement in order to better prepare these members in making a decision about entering the law enforcement profession. While fulfilling this endeavor, it is recognized that the explorers provide helpful services to the police department and the community at large.
During the school year, we attend classroom training and then participate in scenarios where we get hands-on practice in a training environment. Woodbury Police officers teach these classes and practical skills.
At the end of April the Minnesota Law Enforcement Explorer Conference is held in Breezy Point, Minnesota. At this conference, we are able to apply the training we have received in practical scenarios to see how effectively we can handle different situations. There are approximately 400 explorers from all over the state who attend this conference. The Woodbury Police Department provides officers to teach the classes and oversee the program. We perform various fund-raisers to help support the costs of uniforms and exploring conferences.
